Directions for chlorinating wells
*NOTE* Chlorination is necessary only if the results are positive. Results are known 24 hours after sampling. Please call this department then. It takes three (3) to five (5) days to remove all chlorine with normal usage.
Be sure not to let the well run more than 15-20 minutes at a time (particularly with a bored well), so as not to damage the pump.
Be cautious when using super chlorinated water for washing clothing (colored items), or personal hygiene. Super chlorination can act as an irritant. Boiling water for twenty (20) minutes will remove chlorine and also kill most bacteria should you need water for drinking purposes.
Chlorinated water from your well will not adversely affect your septic system.
If you have any questions, feel free to call the Fayette County Health Department at 770-460-5730 x 5415.
